  • Author: Sarah
  • Total Time: 20 minutes (plus chilling time)
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x

Description

An easy, no-cook tailgate recipe featuring distinct layers of refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, cheese, black beans, tomatoes, and salsa. This crowd-pleasing dip is visually stunning, budget-friendly, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (16oz / 450g) refried beans
  • 1 cup (240g) full-fat sour cream
  • 1 jar (14-16oz / 400-450g) guacamole
  • 2 cups (200g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 can (15oz / 425g) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 medium Roma tomatoes, diced
  • 45 stalks green onions, sliced
  • 1 jar (16oz / 450g) chunky salsa
  • 1 large bag (15-20oz / 425-565g) sturdy tortilla chips
  • Optional: Sliced jalapeños, chopped cilantro, sliced black olives, corn kernels

Instructions

  1. Prep ingredients: Rinse and drain black beans, dice tomatoes, slice green onions, shred cheese, and measure sour cream and guacamole.
  2. Spread the refried beans evenly across the bottom of a 9×13 glass baking dish to form the base layer.
  3. Dollop and spread the sour cream over the bean layer.
  4. Spread the guacamole evenly over the sour cream layer.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the guacamole layer.
  6. Spread the rinsed and drained black beans over the cheese layer.
  7. Spread the diced tomatoes over the black bean layer.
  8. Pour and spread the salsa evenly over the top layer.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (up to 4 hours) to allow flavors to meld and layers to set.
  10. Serve with sturdy tortilla chips on the side or arranged around the edge.

Notes

Do not skip the chilling time; it helps the layers set and prevents sliding. Rinse black beans well to avoid a watery dip. Use sharp cheddar for better flavor and texture. Sturdy chips like Fritos Original Scoops work best. This dip does not freeze well due to dairy separation. It tastes better the next day as flavors meld.
